Tags: arizona state university, biodesign insitute, biomarkers, diabetes, phoenix va, university of arizona[Source: Phoenix Business Journal] - The Biodesign Institute at Arizona State University has received a $3.1 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to fund a study for the early detection of diabetes.
Funded by NIH’s National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, or NIDDK, scientists will look for molecular signs to determine how to predict who will develop the disease long before symptoms appear.
Researchers also will look for biomarkers that could indicate how soon a diabetic patient might be at risk of having a heart attack or losing a limb, said Randall Nelson, principal investigator of the study and director of the Molecular Biomarkers Laboratory at the Biodesign Institute.
