Research at the University of Arizona brings $400 million annually into Pima County and Arizona economies, according to a report released today by the UA Office of Economic Development.

The report, University of Arizona Research Expenditures: Generating Jobs, Wages and Tax Revenues in the Local Economy, an Economic and Tax Revenue Analysis for FY 2002, is first in a series that will evaluate technology development in Tucson and Pima County.

Highlights from the report:

  • In FY 2002, UA attracted $285.1 million in research dollars, $193.9 million of which went to the College of Science, College of Medicine, and College of Agriculture.
  • UA research creates more than 9,500 jobs and $246.4 million in wages statewide
  • Research at UA generates $20.1 million in tax revenues to state and local governments, and $384.6 million in sales (including wages and tax revenues)
