University of Arizona was honored earlier this month for the revitalization accompanying the university's expansion of its College of Medicine in downtown Phoenix.
The Downtown Phoenix Partnership presented UA with the DREAMR, or Downtown Revitalization Effort Awards of Merit and Recognition, Organization Award. The award is given in recognition of organizations that "bring new development, historic preservation, or creative reuse of a building to enhance the image and attractiveness of Copper Square."
UA is currently renovating the historic Phoenix Union High School buildings to house the College of Medicine-Phoenix Campus. The program is expected to enroll its first class of 24 students in 2007 and to eventually host 150 students.
A recent economic-impact study conducted by Tripp Umbach Healthcare Consulting Inc. reported that the new campus could result in the creation of between 14,000 to 24,000 new jobs and have an overall economic impact of between $1.1 and $2.1 billion by 2025.
The Downtown Phoenix Partnership is a nonprofit organization made up of property owners and business and civic leaders. Every year it recognizes individuals and organizations that make significant contributions to the revitalization of Copper Square in Phoenix.
