The Center, founded in 1996, was previously part of the university's Arizona Research Laboratories. It is sponsored jointly by the Southern Arizona Veterans Affairs Health Care System. The Center combats Valley Fever through public awareness and education, promotion of high-quality patient care, and research.

Valley Fever, or coccidioidomycosis, is an infectious disease caused by inhaling tiny spores of a fungus that grows in Southwestern deserts. More than 3,300 cases were reported in Arizona in 2002, a rise of nearly one-third over 2001.
